Hellenic Energy Exchange
An online marketplace for power purchase agreements, run by the operator of Greece’s energy markets.
EnExGroup, the official operator of Greece’s energy markets, needed a digital marketplace where producers, suppliers and traders could contract directly instead of negotiating every power purchase agreement by hand.
I owned it end to end. Discovery, product decisions, architecture, build and the AWS deployment it runs on were all mine, and it shipped inside the three-month regulatory deadline it had to meet.
Overview
A digital marketplace designed to democratise access to energy trading, built for the official operator of Greece’s energy markets.
The need
EnExGroup needed to digitise their segment of Greece’s energy trading ecosystem within an aggressive three-month timeline set by regulatory requirements. They lacked the bandwidth and the expertise to develop a sophisticated digital marketplace that could handle sensitive financial transactions while meeting strict compliance standards.
They needed not just a technology vendor, but a strategic partner to augment their team with the capacity to deliver a secure, user-friendly platform that could accommodate both established energy producers and smaller renewable suppliers entering the market. It had to be intuitive enough for immediate adoption, yet architecturally robust enough to support significant scaling as the market evolved.
My approach
I started with an intensive discovery workshop involving key EnExGroup stakeholders, technical teams and regulatory experts. Working that way let me rapidly map the complex business processes, regulatory requirements and security protocols essential to a compliant energy trading platform.
With their team, I crafted a detailed implementation roadmap that prioritised the critical features for the MVP launch while establishing the technical foundation for future enhancements. I worked in two-week agile sprints, which gave EnExGroup continuous visibility and kept everyone aligned throughout the process.
Security and compliance drove the technical decisions: rigorous authentication protocols, encryption standards, and the audit trails required in critical infrastructure. Throughout development I kept a transparent feedback loop through weekly demonstrations, user testing sessions and regular security assessments, so the approach was validated as it was built.
The solution
I delivered a comprehensive digital marketplace that modernises EnExGroup’s process flow and positions them to transform operations after go-live, through three key components.
Unified trading portal
A secure platform where energy producers, suppliers and traders can publish offers, express interest, negotiate terms and formalise contracts, all with near real-time visibility and status tracking.
Robust security architecture
Enterprise-grade protection incorporating role-based access controls, end-to-end encryption, comprehensive audit logging and compliance with ISO 27001 standards, which is what a platform handling sensitive market data requires.
Streamlined workflow management
Automated approval processes, notification systems and document handling that reduce processing time while maintaining regulatory compliance.
